The Idaho Department of Agriculture has confirmed a case of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in Ada County, according to information from the Equine Disease Communication Center. This is the first reported case of neurologic herpesvirus in Idaho this year.
The 10-year-old Quarter Horse mare had onset of clinical sign on March 27 that included ataxia, fever and urinary incontinence. The mare, who’s vaccination status is unknown, is still alive.
It was noted that this mare traveled to the Salty Dash Futurity in South Jordan, Utah, and was at that location just south of Salt Lake City from March 15-17. The mare has not traveled to any other events or locations since returning from the futurity, and she is currently under veterinary care at a private equine facility in Ada County.
